Film Series Part Three - Roll Red Roll
On Wednesday, September 25th, the Gender Equality Law Center held the third screening in our Feminist Film Series. We screened the award-winning documentary Roll Red Roll Followed by an informative and enlightening Q&A with Director Nancy Schwartzman and Feminist Lawyer Carrie Goldberg.
Roll Red Roll is the debut feature film: true-crime thriller that goes behind the headlines of the notorious Steubenville, Ohio rape case to uncover the deep-seated and social media-fueled “boys will be boys” culture at the root of high school sexual assault in America. The film unflinchingly asks, why didn’t anyone stop it?
Know Your "Labor" Rights
Know Your "Labor" Rights! Allegra took part in a fantastic panel discussion at NYC Law School on September 10th about the rights of pregnant employees and patients. She spoke alongside partnership organizations National Advocates for Pregnant Women and Ancient Song Doula Services.
PRIDE Month and Anniversary of Stonewall
In remembrance of the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, we created a video highlighting some of our work on behalf of the LGBTQ-GNC community, including interviews with two of our clients. Watch these courageous plaintiffs’ incredible strength in taking on the fight for LGBTQ justice in their workplace and school.
Film Series Part Two - Netizens
On Wednesday, May 1st, at 5:30pm, the Gender Equality Law Center held the second screening in our Feminist Film Series. We screened the award-winning documentary NETIZENS, followed by an exclusive Q&A with Director Cynthia Lowen and superstar attorney Carrie Goldberg, who is featured in the film, and a wine & cheese reception.
NETIZENS exposes the proliferation of cyber harassment faced by women, spreading from the web to the most intimate corners of their lives. As the internet becomes the next frontier of civil rights, this feature documentary follows three women who are targets of harassment, along with advocates, legal experts and others, as they confront digital abuse and strive for equality and justice online.
Film Series Part One: Half the Picture
On December 5, 2018, GELC held the first of its three-part film series. The event kicked off with a screening of the award-winning documentary HALF THE PICTURE, followed by an intimate Q&A with director Amy Adrion. Amy was joined by Deirdre Fishel, a director and writer of documentaries, for a rich conversation about bias against women directors and the progress that has been made.
HALF THE PICTURE features interviews with women directors including Ava DuVernay, Lena Dunham, Miranda July, and other groundbreaking women, investigates bias against female directors in Hollywood. Out Magazine described the critically-acclaimed documentary as “The #TimesUp Movie You Must See as Soon as Possible.” All proceeds from the event were donated to the Gender Equality Law Center and its tireless efforts to fight sexism, transphobia, homophobia, and all forms of gender bias. *The event was proudly co-sponsored by Crumiller P.C. and C.A. Goldberg Law, PLLC, two law firms united in arms to support GELC and smash the patriarchy.
Women's Herstory Month
In celebration of International Women's Day, and support of the A Day Without A Woman strike, GELC has created a short video. Join us in our commitment to fight against pernicious stereotypes and combat discrimination for all women and gender-oppressed people.
Shirley Chisholm Women of Excellence Award
Please join us in congratulating Gender Equality Law Center’s Founder and Executive Director, Allegra Fishel, for receiving the Shirley Chisholm Women of Excellence Award. In honor of Women’s Herstory Month, State Senator Hamilton continued Shirley Chisholm’s legacy as a true catalyst of change by recognizing the achievements of other Brooklyn women. Allegra was specifically acknowledged for her Excellence in Social Justice and Advocacy – an honor that was astutely awarded!
Brooklynite Shirley Chisholm was an educator, the first African-American woman elected to Congress and the first woman to run for President on a major party ticket. To those of us watching forty-five years ago, this progress was a signal that things were starting to shift for women and people of color. As a tribute to Shirley Chisholm and how her legacy continues in GELC’s work today, we created and showed a video during the celebration. A difficult reminder that nearly five decades after the apparent movement toward inclusivity, organizations like GELC still work tirelesslyto secure and advocate for the rights of those held at the fringes of our society.
We also want to thank and recognize the other outstanding “Women of Excellence” for their commitment to making our world a safer, kinder, more equitable place. Being inspired by and standing on the shoulders of giants like Shirley Chisholm, and like those honored last week, Allegra has fought on behalf of women, families and members of the LGBTQ community in New York City for over 25 years. Our work in gender justice is not done – but today we take a moment to acknowledge the determined and unremitting efforts of those on behalf of disenfranchised communities – past, present and future.
